Philosophy of Care

Oaken Holt aims to provide residents with a secure and relaxed environment which each individual considers “home”. Within this environment their care, well-being, comfort, dignity, individuality and privacy is of the utmost importance.

Staff are sensitive to the changing needs of residents and, where possible, residents, their families and advocates are encouraged to participate in the development of their care plans; this involvement is highly valued.

Programmes of activities are designed to encourage mental alertness, self esteem and social interaction with other residents, these will be planned to include as many diverse activities as possible, taking into account differing capabilities and interests and wishes.

All care staff will be appropriately qualified; staff training programmes are ongoing and are in line with the latest developments as laid down by current legislation.

The resident’s rights are paramount and Oaken Holt Care Home is resident led. Oaken Holt encourages the residents to exercise their rights to the full.

In order to protect confidentiality as much as possible and in the knowledge that letters  to Oaken Holt Care sent by Residents and their families were not meant for general view we do not enclose them in our statement of purpose. However, in compliance with the National Care Standards Act, they may be seen on request.

Privacy and Dignity

Residents are encouraged to furnish their own accommodation.

All rooms are lockable and have their own keys (it should be noted that residents should insure their own belongings)

All individual accommodation is considered to be the resident’s home and as such they have the right to invite any visitors into it that they wish to receive and they have the right to privacy whenever they choose.

All records and information appertaining to a resident are only accessible to authorised personnel and the confidentiality of these documents is respected at all times.

In order to maintain dignity all residents are discreetly assisted whenever difficulties are experienced whether through age, disability or desire, with their personal hygiene, grooming and behavior,

Independence

Oaken Holt recognises the difficulties often faced when living in a care home and residents are encouraged to retain independence by:-

Wherever possible, being given the opportunity to express their views on and be involved with the records on their own care.

Care staff encouraging residents to maximise all opportunities for self care.

Care staff helping residents to take reasonable risks, which will be fully assessed.

Assisting residents to maintain links with contacts outside the home, if so desired.

Freedom of choice

All residents must be allowed to choose the home that they wish to live in and be able to ensure, as far as is practically possible, that the home that they select will be able to facilitate their individual daily living choices and their care needs. Oaken Holt will:-

Provide comprehensive information about the home, services and care available.

Provide each resident with a contract and statement of the terms and conditions of residency.

Carry out a needs assessment on each resident prior to admission.

Offer the resident the first month’s stay on a trial basis, thereafter; one month’s notice will be required from either party to terminate the agreement.

Provide an extensive menu from which residents may make their selection and allow, within reason, the resident to make the decision of where they wish to dine.

Continually offer a range of social and leisure activities.

Within the realms of practicality, avoid strict routines and maintain maximum flexibility in the daily life of the home.
